Just two months in to BBC Worldwide Labs initiative to support emerging UK digital start-ups with their ambitions to take their plans global, I’m delighted to share the news that the team are celebrating their first award!
Labs, Programme Director, Astrid Sandoval, and representatives from four of the six start-ups Flooved, Ko-Su, Foodity and Yakatak, (wireWax and Minimonos were sadly unable to attend), joined more than 200 hundred business leaders and entrepreneurs at the third annual event held at the Design Museum. The room was filled with anticipation and excited chatter to see who would be recognised as this year’s innovative leaders. The test was to show real ability to change the face of the digital landscape through developing innovative and inspiring new business models.
The Labs team were initially invited to the event after winning a spot on the short-list for the ‘Best Example of Building an Entrepreneurial Culture’ alongside winners Wayra, the largest global ICT accelerator. However, BBC Worldwide Labs managed to wow the audience and pick up the ‘Wired People’s Choice’ Award, a new accolade for this, the third annual CEA ceremony.
Astrid and members from the start-ups did a stirling job explaining the ethos behind Labs and shared snippets of their adventures so far with a willing and interested stream of fellow entrepreneurs, something that was noted by one of the evening’s sponsors Trevor Booth, of Market Gravity.
“The representatives for BBC Worldwide Labs, were bursting with enthusiasm and tales of their experiences so far and why Labs is such an important initiative for start-ups to get involved with. Their energy and excitement was felt by everyone who attended and it was a pleasure to see their efforts recognised with the Wired People’s Choice award.”
Smiling with pride, Astrid honoured the six teams currently taking part in the initiative: “I think it’s a testament to the start-ups we work with – they are some of the most innovative digital media start-ups coming out into the market place and companies to watch and follow.”
Aside from finding an appropriate spot for our shiny new award the team are busy with plans for our Social Media panel session which will take place on Tuesday November 13, as part of Internet Week Europe. For more details on this and BBC Worldwide Labs click here.
